The pintail is a slender, fast flying, and very alert puddle duck.  It has always been my favorite duck and is perhaps the most elegant of all of the ducks just sitting on the water.  Habitat loss has severly affected this bird.

Looking at this puffin in breeding plumage always makes me wonder what Mother Nature was up to when she created this pigeon-sized puffin.  They can be seen along the California coastal islands during their winter migration.  Its huge beak is useful in catching and holding fish.

Anna’s is the largest hummingbird in California.  The adult male has a bright crimson head and throat, which is lacking in the female.  The Anna’s winters in Arizona and Mexico.

The largest of all of the penguins, the Emperor Penguin lives in the Antarctic and comes to shore in early winter to lay its single egg and bear its chick in temperatures often exceeding 58º below zero (-58º).  The egg and chick live on the feet of the parent birds being kept warm by a flap of skin on the belly of the parent that fits over the chick.
